    Salt Water vs. Chlorine Pools: Which Is Better in New Mexico?

    If you're building a pool or considering a conversion, you'll run into the salt water vs chlorine pool debate fast. The first thing to clear up: salt water pools are chlorine pools. They just make their own chlorine instead of having it added by hand. Here's an honest comparison for New Mexico owners.

    How each one actually works

    A traditional chlorine pool gets chlorine added directly — tablets, liquid, or granular.

    A salt water pool has a modest amount of salt dissolved in the water and a salt chlorine generator that converts it into chlorine through electrolysis. The chlorine is produced continuously and automatically.

    The feel

    This is where salt water genuinely wins for most people. The water feels softer and gentler on skin and eyes, and there's less of the strong chlorine smell (that smell is actually chloramines, which build up more in poorly maintained traditional pools). Salinity is low — far below seawater — so it doesn't taste salty.

    Day-to-day maintenance

    Salt water requires less hands-on chlorine management. You're not handling tablets weekly; the generator handles production. You still test and balance everything else.

    Traditional chlorine requires more regular manual dosing, but the equipment is simpler and there's less to break.

    Cost over time

    Salt water has a higher upfront cost (the generator system), and the salt cell is a wear item that needs replacement every several years — a real, recurring expense people often forget when they hear "cheaper to run." Ongoing salt is inexpensive.

    Traditional chlorine costs less upfront but more in ongoing chemical purchases.

    Over a long horizon they end up closer than either camp admits.

    The New Mexico factors

    Hard water and scaling. Our water tends toward hard, and salt cells are particularly sensitive to calcium scaling — scale on the cell plates reduces output and shortens cell life. Salt systems here need attention to calcium hardness and periodic cell cleaning. This is the biggest local caveat.

    High-altitude UV. Both types face the same intense UV, so stabilizer matters either way. A salt system produces steadily, which can help keep up with UV losses — but it also means an under-sized or scaled cell falls behind quickly in peak summer.

    Freezing winters. Salt cells and their plumbing need proper winterizing, adding a step at closing.

    Corrosion. Salt water is mildly corrosive over time to certain metals and some natural stone coping. Worth considering with the stone and metal finishes common on Southwestern homes.

    So which should you choose?

    Choose salt water if: you value the softer water feel, want less weekly chlorine handling, plan to keep the pool many years, and will stay on top of calcium hardness and cell maintenance.

    Choose traditional chlorine if: you want lower upfront cost and simpler equipment, you're not bothered by handling chemicals, or you'd rather not add a wear-item cell to the maintenance budget.

    Either way, the water still needs regular testing and balancing — salt water is lower-effort, not no-effort. The pools that stay beautiful are the consistently maintained ones, whichever system they run.
